Ah, New Year’s Eve—the time of year when we don our party hats, pour some bubbly, and make a grand declaration of how the upcoming year will be the best one yet. "I’m going to get fit," "I’ll finally learn to play the guitar," "This year, I’ll totally stop procrastinating!" Sound familiar?
New Year’s Resolutions: The Hype Train
For many of us, New Year’s resolutions are like the fireworks at midnight—bright and dazzling, but often short-lived. They’re usually born from the excitement of a fresh start, carrying a certain pressure to make grand, sweeping changes. The allure is real—who doesn't love the idea of a complete life overhaul with the simple stroke of midnight?
But here’s the catch: Resolutions often lack the nitty-gritty detail that helps us follow through. They tend to be broad, vague, and driven by the calendar rather than personal readiness. Ever heard the joke that gyms are packed in January and ghost towns by February? That’s New Year’s resolutions in action.
Goal Setting: The Practical Powerhouse
Now, let’s talk about goal setting. It’s like the humble sidekick in a superhero movie—less flashy, but way more reliable. Goal setting involves breaking down those big dreams into smaller, manageable steps. Instead of "I’m going to get fit," a well-set goal might be "I’ll exercise three times a week for 30 minutes."
The magic of goal setting lies in its specificity and measurability. It’s about creating a roadmap with clear milestones and deadlines. Goals are grounded in reality, considering our current lifestyle, strengths, and areas for improvement. They’re not tied to a specific date on the calendar but are a continuous process of self-improvement.

So, which one’s better? It’s not a matter of good or bad, but rather what works best for you. New Year’s resolutions can spark that initial motivation, like fireworks lighting up the sky. They’re exciting and can kickstart the journey. However, to keep the fire burning, goal setting is your best bet—like a campfire that needs consistent fuel to stay lit.
The trick is to harness the initial burst of energy from your resolution and channel it into a structured plan with specific, achievable goals. Instead of saying, "I’ll be more mindful this year," break it down: "I’ll meditate for 10 minutes every morning."
Remember, it’s not about perfection but progress. Whether you’re a die-hard resolution maker or a pragmatic goal-setter, the key is to find a balance that keeps you inspired and on track.

Seeing as the year is only just getting started I thought I’d share something with you that I’ve shared with my friends, family, and clients too. I call it the Goal Card (imaginative isn’t it …😂)
Now before you fill out the goal card, I want you to get really clear on what you want for yourself in 2025. If life was 100% up to you – no husband, no kids, no elderly parents, no budget – what would it look like for you? I want you to DREAM and dream BIG! You might think I’ve gone nuts, but hear me out …
Vision: The Foundation of Goals
Having a clear vision is like having a roadmap for your life. It’s that big picture that keeps you going, even when things get tough. Think of it as your personal North Star. In the Bible, Habakkuk 2:2-3 says, “Then the Lord answered me and said: 'Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry.'”
This reminds us (and affirms) that we need to have a vision, keep our vision clear, and be patient, trusting that everything will fall into place at the right time. Our vision is the end goal and without it, where are we heading?
Once you have clarity about your destination, you can plan for the journey to come. It’s just like planning your vacation! It doesn’t just happen, it’s a process. Your goals for this year should be a part of the process of making that vision your reality – your goals should be aligned with your vision.
Now that you have a better understanding of what your goals should include, go ahead and fill out your goals for your health, wealth, and relationships for 2025! The great thing about this is that you can sit your partner down and do this together as a couple too – or include your kids and write down some family goals. Why not share it with your employees or colleagues and get clear on your team goals for the year?
